The visualization displays tagged documents as points within a circle.
Abstract
This work describes the developement, implementation and validation of a new application for the interactive visualization of tags and documents in a folksonomy. The core idea of the visualization is to align tags along a circle and to display relevant documents as points inside. The positioning of the points is done in a way that allows a user to draw conclusions which tags are assigned for the document. For testing purposes the folksonomy of the social bookmarking website del.icio.us was used. All relevant data of 1767 bookmarks was downloaded and integrated into the application. The goal of the application is to support searching as well as browsing in the set of bookmarks in an optimal way. For that purpose it offers various navigation options to modify the visualization in an interactive way and to display information about bookmarks or single tags. Afterwards a user study was conducted in order to determine the efficiency of the visualization for searching and browsing. The focus was to determine the use of the implemented features and navigation options for the user and to find suggestions for improvement. It has been shown that the users require a detailed introduction in the use of the application since many features are new to the user and they do not intuitionally grasp their meaning. After familiarization however the application was perceived as well suited for searching and browsing within a folksonomy.Download
