An Evaluation of the Influence of External Factors on Authentication Performance and Memorability Diploma Thesis, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, 2010 (bib) |
In a seven-week online study the performance of the calculator, line and random layout was compared with the performance of the telephone layout. The goal was to investigate the influence of numeric keyboard layouts on authentication performance and memorability. In addition, a second study was carried out to compare the learning process on a random layout with the learning process on a telephone layout. Participants authenticated at irregular intervals in a simulated ATM. The test system recorded the user interactions, the time and the error rate. For the first time the orientation phase before entering a PIN has been involved in the analysis. The quantitative data was firmed by two questionnaires. It was shown that unfamiliar keyboard layouts have a significant effect on the authentication time. Effects were also detected on the error rate and the memorability of the PIN. Since the participants were used to the telephone layout, this led to the best performance and supported the memorability of the PIN. The use of a random layout led to the worst performance. It was shown that the negative impact on the performance and the memorability is even worse, the more a layout differs from the usual layout. The results suggest that the consistent use of a single keyboard layout can improve performance significantly. Since the analysis of the orientation time has contributed much to the outcomes, it should also be considered in future studies. |
