Toolkit for crowd-sourced mobile environmental sensing

BA/DA/MA

Status in progress
Advisor Dr. Aurélien Tabard
Professor Prof. Dr. Andreas Butz

Task

This project(s) is the follow up to the NoxDroid.org project (paper, poster).

It involves building mobile sensors plugged to Android phones that can report information about the environment (air quality, radio-activity, noise, etc.). The idea behind the project is of using low-cost and easy to build sensors which lets citizens gather information about their environment, rather than relying on expensive and precise sensors managed by public or private laboratories. In the long run, the hope is that the quantity of data collected will balanced the lack of precision.

This project is big and can be divided into 3 sub-projects (carried by different students):

  • A plug and play sensor platform based on the IOIO board (Arduino for Android).
  • A mobile (Android) app, gathering, caching and uploading the sensor data. Providing live feedback on the sensor data.
  • A web platform (based on the Google App Engine or equivalent), gathering data from the mobile app (you should develop a REST API), providing visualization both of the personal data of a user and anonymized/aggregated data.
  • Alternatively a sub-project could be to develop the sensor platform and mobile application for iOS devices
