General information

In general, the following ways exist in order to go abroad:

  • ERASMUS-Exchange with one of our European partner universities
  • Besides an ERASMUS exchange, you can also apply for an ERASMUS internship, for example, if you wish to write your thesis at a foreign institution. Note that there are no fixed partner universities. The application deadline depends on the internship dates.
  • Research exchange with a work group that we are in contact with. In this case we expect to know the applicant from previous work (e.g. Bachelor, seminar) to make sure that the recommendation does not negatively impact the relationship to the partner university.
We are in close contact with the following universities, which makes research exchanges feasible in general:
    • Columbia University (USA), contact person: Prof. Butz
    • Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta (USA), contact person: Prof. Butz
    • Lancaster University (UK), contact person: Prof. Schmidt
    • Newcastle University (UK), contact person: Prof. Butz
    • University of British Columbia, Vancouver (Canada)
    • University of Calgary (Canada)
    • University of California Santa Barbara (USA), contact person: Prof. Butz
    • University of Glasgow (UK)
For more information, please contact erasmus ät medien.ifi.lmu.de
  • Established exchange programs of the LMU (LMUExchange - placement via the Referat Internationale Angelegenheite. Examples: National Institute for Informatics (Tokio), CREPUQ-Program for Quebec
  • Foreign contacts of the CDTM, mostly for CDTM-students.
  • Various self-organized positions abroad. Financing or remission of student loans needs to be clarified individuall. Guidance via the Referat Internationale Angelegenheiten. Example: National University of Singapore (see Experience reports).
Additional important information concerning staying abroad is provided by the LMU.

Partner universities

Brisbane

QUT in Brisbane, Australia

In Brisbane, Australia at the Queensland University of Technology it is possible to write a master's thesis in the subject Media Informatics or conduct a practical project (admissible as single-project in the Master's study program). At the "Urban Informatics" research lab, many HCI-projects that are focused on the urban lifestyle are conducted. A selection procedure is used to determine which applicant qualifies for the exchange. The exchange can take up to six months. In Australia, a general "Bench Fee" is required - financial sponsorships need to be organized by the student themselves. Further information can be found as a PDF. Please contact erasmus ät medien.ifi.lmu.de before contacting the people named in the PDF. It is recommended to establish first contact ca. 12 months before the desired stay.

Lancaster

Lancaster University, United Kingdom

At the Lancaster University in north western England it is also possible to write theses. With Brexit, the UK is no longer a partner in the ERASMUS programme but there are still funding possibilities. There is access to detailed information. Further information can be acquired via erasmus ät medien.ifi.lmu.de.

SWUN

South-West University for Nationalities, Chengdu, China

Since fall 2013 there is a cooperation agreement with this university in the capital of the Sichuan province. In general, exchange students are welcome. However, this mostly applies to students who are interested in learning the chinese language and know elementary chinese. Students who are interested can contact Prof. Butz.

Other partner universities

A full list of all partner universities of the LMU can be found at LMU International Exchange. Many universties offer research practicas with financial support e.g. the university of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada.

Scholarships

Information on scholarships can be found on the LMU-page on sponsorships.

Information on sponsorships for internships abroad (for at least 2 months) via the LMU can be found at www.lmu.de. Note especially the scholarship 'Erasmus-Praktikum'. Here, internships of a duration between 13 weeks and 12 months in countries that are part of the Erasmus-program are sponsored. Students who have already completed Erasmus-studies can get Erasmus-sponsorships again by taking part in an Erasmus-internship. Scholarships for internships aborad can be approved on relatively short notice; a sponsorship application should be handed in at least 3-4 weeks before departure.

Recognition of course achievements

It is possible to recognize course achievements obtained abroad for selected modules at the LMU. Necessary formalities before and after departure can be found on the LMU page Recognition of course achievements. Information as to the selection of courses and the recognition of accomplishments abroad can be inquired via erasmus ät medien.ifi.lmu.de. All necessary documents for the recognition of examinations abroad are prepared via this contact. The recognition of the module itself is processed after accomplishing it via the coordinator of studies.

Language courses

The LMU offers an abundance of language courses. Good language skills are not only important when abroad, they can be a deciding factor in the application. Please refer to the language center for further information.
