Seit Januar 2015 arbeite ich nicht mehr an der LMU München. Sie können mich allerdings weiterhin über meine alte EMail-Adresse erreichen.
Until 2014, Sebastian was a member of the HCI Group at the University of Munich (LMU), Germany as a PhD candidate and research associate. He was involved in the interdisciplinary CAR@TUM User Experience project, a cooperation of BMW AG, Technische Universität München (TUM) and the University of Munich (LMU), focusing on the emotional aspects of e-mobility. Sebastian builds and formalizes experience prototypes for automotive applications and explores gestural interfaces in the car. Recently, he submitted his PhD thesis on Experience Prototyping.

The Periscope: An Experience Design Case Study
The Periscope is an interactive device supporting passengers in a car to explore the outside environment. Following an experience design process, we trigger positive emotions by addressing psychological needs: The exploration of interesting places around the car addresses the need for stimulation. When passing the Periscope on to others, discoveries can be shared and discussed, creating a feeling of relatedness among the group. Based on the story and a storyboard, we built three hardware prototypes at different early stages of the process, allowing to evaluate whether the story can be experienced during the interaction with the Periscope. |
Heartbeat: Experience the Pulse of an Electric Vehicle
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are an emerging technology and open up an exciting new space for designing in-car interfaces. This technology enhances driving experience by a strong acceleration, regenerative breaking and especially a reduced noise level. However, engine vibrations and sound transmit valuable feedback to drivers of conventional cars, e.g. signaling that the engine is running and ready to go. We address this lack of feedback with Heartbeat, a multimodal electric vehicle information system. Heartbeat communicates the state of the electric drive including energy flow and the energy level of the batteries in a natural and experienceable way. |
CAR@TUM: The Road to User Experience
During a three year interdisciplinary research project, user experiences for future vehicles were analyzed, implemented and evaluated in a cooperation between the chairs for Ergonomics, Industrial Design and Product Development at Technische Universität München, the chair for Human-Computer-Interaction at Ludwig-Maximilians-ät München and the BMW Group Research and Technology. The objective of the CAR@TUM project "User Experience" was to develop a generic procedure to design and evaluate user experiences during product interaction. Results are visualized at designingexperiences.org. |
Culturally Independent Gestures for In-Car Interactions
Contactless gestures have hardly been successful in cars so far, but have received attention in other contexts recently. We propose a way to achieve a better acceptance by both drivers and car manufacturers. Using a four-step process, we developed a small set of culturally independent and therefore easy-to-learn gestures, which can be used universally across different devices. We built a first prototype using distance sensors to detect the stop gesture in front of several devices. We conducted a user study during actual driving situations, testing the pragmatic and hedonic quality of the approach as well as its attractiveness. |
Comparing Direct and Remote Tactile Feedback on Interactive Surfaces
Tactile feedback on touch surfaces has shown to greatly improve the interaction in quantitative and qualitative metrics. Recently, researchers have assessed the notion of remote tactile feedback, i.e., the spatial separation of touch input and resulting tactile output on the user's body. This approach has the potential to simplify the use of tactile feedback with arbitrary touch devices and allows the design of novel tactile stimuli by stimulus combination. We conducted three consecutive laboratory studies. For remote tactile stimuli, we found improved accuracy and interaction speed, regardless of the body location. |
HapticArmrest: Remote Tactile Feedback on Touch Surfaces Using Combined Actuators
Interactive surfaces form an integral component of intelligent environments. We introduce HapticArmrest, a simple tactile interface that communicates tactual surface characteristic and form of interactive elements on direct touch surfaces. Spatially separating manual touch input and active tactile output allows for the combination of various types of tactile actuators for versatile haptic feedback. In a preliminary experiment, we indicate that our approach enables a reliable discrimination of virtual elements on touch surfaces solely based on tactile representations. |
