Rich interaction sets Shapes which are integrated into interactive surfaces can support the interaction with the content that is displayed underneath. In addition to simple tapping for selection, such haptically perceivable elements potentially offer a rich interaction set. In our application of hollow-supported widgets, the shape supports to drag in, drag out, and rotate the finger along the hollow's edge to manipulate the assigned functionality. pub

Pointing interaction A quick and easy way to interact with object in the surrounding - may it be inside or outside the car - is pointing. You can identify components around the cockpit like the glove compartment, the rear view mirrors, or objects along the street, and get information about them or perform other further steps. We developed a recognition algorithm and conducted a qualitative study on the road to evaluate different use cases for pointing interaction. pub

Vertical bend interaction What can we use shapes in non-planar displays for? They enable new ways of interaction as we can feel certain parts of the screen and know where we are even if we are not looking. We can e.g. trigger a certain action by moving our finger along a shape, or adjust values depending on where we are. pub

Direct and horizontal bend interaction We built a prototype consisting of a screen with two shaped elements - a convex and a concave horizontal bend. Interaction on such non-planar surfaces can provide advantages compared to flat surfaces in terms of tapping and dragging on interactive elements on the characteristic portions. pub

Large display interaction Displays in the car are getting bigger, a growing amount of content and functionality is available in the car - can we still control that? Controlling an integrated music player while driving requires only a small set of frequently used functions. We explored different ways to access those, and developed three interaction concepts, based on the idea of proprioception, haptic guidance and position-independent control, and evaluated them in a driving simulator. pub

Design space for shaped displays What different categories exist to characterize shaped displays? We identified six categories - shape, size, curvature, structure, style, texture - to provide a starting point to bring together the increasing amount of non-planar displays. We took three projects of our group - curved center stack, digital advertising colum, curve - and gave an example of how to relate them to each other, and identify open issues for future research. pub

Empowering materiality When we design interactive systems, the function often forms the entry point to the creative work. To inspire the pocess and make best use of material and the form factor they provide, it might be useful to have a close look on the properties of materials and the affordances of the shapes they form. pub

Nonvisual feedback Tactile feedback can be used to communicate information without distracting visual attention to a screen. NaviRadar is an interaction technique for mobile phones where users are guided to a destination by providing them with specific vibration patterns. User studies show that patterns can be discriminated easily with a mean deviation of 37 degrees. Compared to spoken instructions, there is no decrease of usability or performance, but the visual and audio channels remain free for other tasks. pub
