Virtual Reality (VR) empowers people to engage in a variety of immersive virtual environments. Extending VR usage from lab- oratories to everyday environments, such as in cars and other transportation, embraces the challenges of impaired real-world awareness. It can be difficult for everyday VR users to keep aware of the confined in-car space, the spatiotemporal information, the vehicle motion, and other passengers along the way when they want to or need to interact with the real environment inside or outside VR. In my thesis, I want to examine this future mobility concept from two perspectives: the immersive technology of mixing reality and virtuality along Milgram′s continuum and the mobile user′s need to preserve awareness of the real environment (RE) and presence in the virtual environment (VE). I aim to understand the challenges and potentials of future mobile use of MR technology in passenger contexts, synthesized with a theoretical framework. |
