FAQ
Prospective students / application
I'm interested in studying MI/MCI. Are there events for prospective students?
Yes, there are two annual events:
- Our Open Lab Day takes place in January.
- The LMU Campustag takes place in January/February (Saturdays always).
Are courses taught in English or German?
Most lectures are held in German, but some (especially Master's lectures) are held in English. This page lists all computer science lectures, seminars and practical courses per semester, including the MI/MCI ones. Those given in English are marked with a flag.
LMU requires proficiency in German in general. For details and further questions regarding language requirements please contact the International Office.
How do I apply for the Bachelor Media Informatics?
Apply for the bachelor program via the central LMU application procedure. Further information on the application process can be found here.
- Application for freshman students is possible only for the winter semester.
- Please note that admission to the Bachelor Media Informatics is restricted by a Numerus Clausus. The NC is recalculated each semester based on the number of applications. Last semester's NC can be checked here.
- If you have questions about your application, please contact the Studentenkanzlei.
How do I apply for the Master Media Informatics/ Human-Computer Interaction?
Apply and find further information on the application process for the master programs via our website.
- Application deadline is January 15 for the summer semester and July 15 for the winter semester.
- Please note that as an international student you also need to apply at the International Office (these are two separate applications).
I already have a Bachelor degree and would like to apply for the Bachelor Media Informatics (Zweitstudium/Second degree).
Please read the information concerning second degree applications at the LMU, in particular about the quota for second degree students.
I come from abroad and would like to apply for the Bachelor/Master program.
Please note that as an international student you need to fulfill two separate application procedures: 1) Application for MI/MCI (as described above), plus 2) application at the international office. See here.
I'm not an international student but my school diploma (qualification for university admission) is from another country.
Please contact the Studentenkanzlei.
I would like to apply for the Master MI/MCI but I do not have my Bachelor certificate yet.
You can apply with a list of your grades and hand in your certificate later. However, the immatriculation is only possible with the certificate. Note that you may be able to obtain a certificate from your study coordinator that acts as a temporary replacement and guarantees that you will receive the Bachelors degree shortly.
I have experiences outside my study program that are relevant to the Master MI/MCI. Can this be considered in my application?
Yes, please write down any additional experiences you find relevant in the motivation letter and enclose related proofs and certificates. See here.
I have a question about the online application form.
Please contact the people listed on the application website directly. The application website states when the application will open. If the application form is not open yet, please wait.
What is the "Eignungsfeststellungsprüfung" for the Master MI/MCI?
Your application will first be assessed on the basis of the documents you handed in. If there are further questions about your experience, you will be invited to an interview. There is no written exam.
I have applied for the Bachelor/Master program. When do I get notified by the university?
Please refer to the application website.
"Fachoberschule/Fachhochschulreife/Feststellung des Hochschulzugangs für qualifizierte Berufstätige": Am I eligible to study at the LMU?
Please contact the Studentenkanzlei for general admission information. In addition, take a look at the following webpages: [1], [2]
I have a full time job. Is there a special study program for me?
No. Our Bachelor and Master programs are intended for full time study. However, you may take up to nine semesters for the Bachelor (regular six), and up to seven semesters for the Master (regular four). If you plan ahead, you may thus reduce the workload per semester by studying up to this maximum duration. Note that lectures etc. are of course still scheduled throughout the whole week, and not just e.g. in the evenings.
I would like to study Media Informatics as a minor subject.
Please go here for further information.
Do I have to choose my minor subject during application? How do I choose my minor subject?
There is a distinction between Bachelor and Master:
- For Bachelor students: No, not during application. Except for "Mediengestaltung" where there is an application procedure at the beginning of the semester (see I would like to apply for "Mediengestaltung" as a minor), the minor is "chosen" by attending the lectures or courses and getting the ECTS points.
- For Master students: In contrast to the Bachelor program, our Master programs are formally separate study programs. Therefore the minor has to be chosen during application.
How do I apply for "Mediengestaltung" as an application subject (i.e. "minor" subject)?
For both our Bachelor and Master program, applicants have to prove their artistic talent:
- Applicants for the Bachelor program have to hand in a portfolio at the beginning of the semester. The deadline and concrete procedure will be announced by the Institut für Kunstpädagogik.
- Applicants for the Master program have to prove their experiences as part of their application. It is possible that you will be invited for a special interview to assess your qualifications.
I have another (non-MI) Bachelor/Master degree, and/or work experience. What are my chances to be accepted for the Master program?
Since our Master program is a computer science degree, you need sufficient prior knowledge in computer science. As a rule of thumb, your prior studies should cover about 120 ECTS equivalent to our Bachelor topics. You can compare your previous studies with our Bachelor curriculum here.
- If you're not accepted right away, you might be invited to a personal interview with our professors.
- A potential outcome of your application could be a conditional acceptance. Here, you have to complete a few individually selected courses from our Bachelor program during the first year of the Master program. Please note that if you have not completed these courses by the end of the first year, you will be exmatriculated and all collected credit points will be erased.
- A motivation essay is part of the application form. You can use it to highlight your prior knowledge and/or work experience. Note that you should attach formal documents as proofs (e.g. work certificates).
I would like to switch to MI coming from another study program. Can I transfer some of my credits and grades to MI? Can I start in a higher semester?
It is possible to transfer (graded) credits to MI if the courses from the other study program match ours regarding content and workload (i.e. same/higher ECTS count). However, note that due to the NC, you still have to apply for the Bachelor program as usual. Only after you've been accepted, you can contact the study coordinator to transfer your credits. Regarding starting in a higher semester (e.g. to be able to start the Bachelor in a summer term), you need 30 ECTS (per added semester) that can be transferred from your previous studies. However, due to the NC restrictions it is currently practically impossible to get accepted in this way. Hence, we highly recommend not to try to start in a higher semester.
I have a Bachelor degree at a Fachhochschule. Can I apply for the Master at LMU?
Yes, the FH Bachelor degree is in general equivalent to a Bachelor degree at a university. For further information, read the following information sheet or contact the Studentenkanzlei. However, please note that applying for the Master MI/HCI is not possible with every Bachelor degree (see also I have another (non-MI) Bachelor/Master degree, and/or work experience).
New students
Is there a welcome/introduction session for new students?
New students are invited to join the "O-Phase"/freshers' week of the Group of Active Faculty members (GAF). For master students, there is an additional welcome session at the beginning of each semester.
I'm about to start my first Bachelor semester and I worry I might miss something important.
Don't panic. Here's a brief overview:
- Check the recommended courses for the first semester.
- Here's a list with links to the websites of individual courses. Some courses may not be listed there yet.
- Register for lectures at Moodle using your campus account. Don't worry, you can still do so during/after the first week(s).
- We highly recommend that you attend the O-Phase (i.e. student orientation / fresher's week). Students of higher semesters will answer most of your questions, and until then there generally are no hard deadlines.
- The application subjects (i.e. minor subjects) are presented during the "O-Phase" as well. You do not have to choose a minor subject beforehand. No application is required, except for "Mediengestaltung". If you plan to apply for "Mediengestaltung" then make sure to prepare a portfolio showcasing your artistic talent. Please see the website of the Kunstpädagogik department for more details. All other minors are "chosen" by attending the respective lectures and exams. No other formal steps are required.
- Go to the first lecture date. All necessary organizational questions are usually addressed there.
Lecture X has multiple dates per week. Do I need to attend all of them?
Yes, you should attend all of them. There are no "repetitions". In contrast, you only need to attend one tutorial class per lecture per week.
The curriculum contains "practical courses". Do I need to find an internship at a company?
No, these "practical courses" are offered by the university. Some may sometimes include cooperations with industry partners.
Where/How do I register for the exams?
In general the lecturers and tutors will inform you on how to register.
Study organisation
Two of my lectures have conflicting schedules.
In general, core MI lecture times do not overlap. However, we cannot guarantee that there are no conflicts involving lectures from other fields. Fortunately, many lectures are recorded (video, podcasts) and offer multiple tutorial classes per week.
Where can I see the dates of all exams?
A list of all fixed exam dates can be found here (the website is administrated by the Examination office).
There's an overlap in the dates of my exams. What do I do?
First contact the course instructors of the concerned lectures early enough. Maybe there is still a possibility to shift the dates. The course instructors always try to avoid collisions with other exams, but it's not always possible to fulfill this for every student.
I'm a Bachelor student. Can I attend a Master lecture?
You can do that, and you can write the exam, but you have to be careful. The credits will only be recognized for the Bachelor studies as a "Vertiefendes Thema" in some cases. In other cases, you will only get the ECTS for the lecture once you're enrolled for the Master later. If you do not plan to do a Master after your Bachelor studies, you will not be able to get Bachelor credits for lectures of the second kind, but the lecture will be listed in a special section of your final transcript. To find out which rule applies, check the Website of the lecture and attend the first lecture. An overview of "Vertiefende Themen" can be found here. If still in doubt contact the study coordinator.
I'm a Master student. Can I attend a Bachelor lecture?
You can do that, but will not get ECTS for it. If you pass the exam, the lecture will be listed in a special section of your transcript.
Where can I get a list of my grades?
You can access your transcript of records here.
A grade is missing in my transcript. What should I do?
Please note that it can take several weeks to complete the grading of an exam, and also to register the grade in the transcript.
If you know that the exam has already been graded, you've waited several weeks, and the grade is still not there, please contact the study coordinator or visit the consultation hours.
I have already completed two practical courses for my Master, can I do another one?
Yes, you can do up to 4 practical courses for your Master MI/MCI and receive credits for them (for the exact number please check your examination regulations). Note that this only applies to practical courses at the university, not to be confused with industry internships.
I have already completed one major seminar for my Master MI/MCI, can I do another one?
Yes, you can do up to 3 seminars at the university for your Master MI/MCI and receive credits for them.
I am studying Kunst und Multimedia. Which practical courses can I attend as "Praktikum Multimedia-Programmierung" (part of P4: Aufbau-Modul: Multimedia-Praxis)?
In the past, the following courses have been accepted as "Praktikum Multimedia-Programmierung":
Creative Coding, Sketching with Hardware, Deswignworkshop 1, Praktikum Web-Programmierung.
Other options are possible. In general, the course should include a technical part - in case of doubt, please contact the student tutors or the examining board.
I am working at a company as an intern/Werkstudent:in. Can I get ECTS credits for my work experience?
This differs depending on the study programme:
- For Bachelor students: Work experiences can be credited as "Persönliche und Soziale Kompetenz" if the job trained and demonstrated personal and social skills. Mainly technical jobs can also be credited as "Projektkompetenz Multimedia" if the task profile is related to multimedia / interaction design / graphics / programming.
- For Master students: Work experiences can only be credited as "Persönliche und Soziale Kompetenz" and only if the job trained and demonstrated personal and social skills. Usually a form of certification for the acquired skills is required. Mainly technical jobs cannot be credited for Master studies. Please note, however, that for research-oriented work, there is the possibility of an "Einzelpraktikum" which can also be carried out in co-operation with a company.
Where can I get a list of my MMI points?
A study module will show up on your transcript once you've collected the required amount of MMI points. If you require information on your MMI points or are sure that you've completed all studies, you've waited for several weeks after the last study, and the study module does not show up in your transcript, please contact Franziska Schwamb.
I have taken part in a user study at another institute. How can I get MMI points for this study?
Please hand in a printed confirmation to Franziska Schwamb. This confirmation has to include
- the name of the study,
- the name of the institute,
- the name and signature of the person responsible for the study,
- the amount of MMI points earned,
- and your matriculation number.
I have a question concerning my minor subject.
Please contact the responsible supervisor.
I am in my third semester and have not passed the "Grundlagen- und Orientierungsprüfung" (GOP) yet. What happens now?
Students who have not passed the GOP after the third semester have to be exmatriculated according to the study regulations. There may be exceptions due to cases of hardship. Please talk to thestudy coordination and be prepared to explain the reasons why you think such an exception should be made for your case!
I'm about to enter my 9th semester (Bachelor) or 7th semester (Master) and I won't finish my studies in time.
You are about to exceed the maximum number of semesters of your study program and will be exmatriculated. In special cases, it might be possible to arrange an extension. You should immediately contact thestudy coordination or the examining board.
I have a serious personal problem that keeps me from studying (e.g., illness, depression, family problems). What can I do?
You can come by the student tutors' office hours to discuss options for your studies (e.g. a study break). The "Studentenwerk" offers free help with social and psychological issues (you can choose a language at the top of the page).
I would like to spend a semester abroad (for studies or a longer internship). What options do I have?
This page gives a good overview of all possible options and also mentions some important points you might want to consider (e.g. getting ECTS points abroad, scholarships, language courses). See also here. If you need further advice, contact the respective staff member at our department or the International Office.
If you plan to be away for a whole semester (or two) and do not plan to work towards any ECTS during that time, it might be useful to check if you can get an "Urlaubssemester" ("leave of absence").
Thesis
How do I find a topic and supervisor for my Bachelor/Master thesis?
Look through the open topics to find a topic you find interesting or to get an overview over the kinds of topics researchers at the department generally supervise.
- Get in touch with the researchers, but do not write generic emails to many people. Rather check the websites of the team members to find out who is working on which research topics. Then contact individual team members and describe your motivation and prior knowledge in their area. You can also suggest ideas for a topic in a particular research area and discuss them with the respective team members.
- In Prof. Schmidt's disputation seminar, researchers present their research fields and potential topics, if required, after the student presentations. The disputation seminar generally gives a good overview of current work and potential topics. The dates can be found here.
- Do not limit your search to the MI/MMI team, but rather consider all computer science chairs at the LMU. You can also find a supervisor at the TUM or at a chair that cooperates with MI/MMI, such as Psychology or the Institute of Phonetics and Speech Processing.
Can I write my Bachelor/Master thesis at a company?
Yes, but you need a Professor and supervisor at the university.
- Note that companies cannot offer thesis work all by themselves (although some companies make it sound like they can, because the rules are different for different types of universities). The topic is always ultimately defined by the university (in cooperation with the industry partner).
- Make sure that your company understands that a thesis is independent scientific work. You will not contribute to day-to-day business for clients, but rather examine a question of scientific interest. A thesis student thus has a fundamentally different role than an intern.
- Also note that you must not get paid for a thesis.
