Requirements
Please note that the study program is in German language and requires a German language certificate. The information in English language below is just for reference. If you want to study media informatics, you should be interested in Computer Science, especially in an application-oriented way of working and interdisciplinary references. An understanding of theoretical basics is absolutely necessary, since essential parts of the knowledge required in media informatics are identical with a classical Computer Science degree. Students of Media Informatics must, among other things, learn programming at the highest level and complete some Mathematics courses. The ability to work in a team is an important requirement for internships and interdisciplinary projects. Knowledge of the English language proves to be indispensable during the course of studies. However, no specialised previous knowledge, even in programming, is required. An indication of good aptitude can be good grades in Mathematics and Natural Sciences, combined with an interest in Social Science and design issues. If grades in Mathematics and/or Physics are poor or just sufficient, we strongly advise against studying Media Informatics.
Application Subjects
Students of Media Informatics must choose one of the following application subjects (elective courses), all of which have intensive media reference. Courses of the different subjects may not be combined!
- Media Management (a special subject of business administration)
- Media Design (a special subject of Art Studies)
- Human-Machine Interaction (a combination of specialized knowledge from Psychology, Design and Statistics)
It is not necessary to decide on one of the application subjects when applying; the decision is made during the first semester by attending the corresponding courses. Only a few places are available for the application subject Media Design; special requirements are to be observed here, see below.
Application Forms
Since 2015, admission to the Bachelor of Media Informatics is (again) restricted due to the great demand. The threshold grade is not known before the applications are received; in the past it was 2.4 (German grade system) in the strictest case. For more information see the following page: Selection criteria and limits in case of local admission restrictions.
It is strongly recommended to find out specifics about the personal requirements and the contents of the study program before applying, especially about the high proportion of mathematical-technical education.
The application is only possible for the winter semester and is done via the LMU's student office, with a deadline of July 15th (in 2021: July 31st as a one-time exception). The application is made via an application portal, which is usually posted online at this address a few weeks before the deadline:
Online application portal: http://www.lmu.de/stud-online
Registration of both Germans and foreign students is always done in person at the Student Office on the dates published by the Office. Students with foreign citizenship and university entrance qualifications acquired abroad will receive their personal enrolment date after an additional pre-registration, also to be done by July 15th, at the International Affairs Office and admissions made there. When enrolling, please present the certificate sent to you after pre-registration in addition to the required documents.
Application Subject Media Design: Required Portfolio
For the successful study of the application subject Media Design, an artistic talent is required. Students interested in this application subject must apply with a portfolio containing a selection of artistic works (approx. 15-20).
The selected works should provide information about how you deal with graphic and coloured tools. Handmade and computer-generated pictorial works are to be submitted.
The following areas should be represented in the folder:
- Graphical works (nature studies, drawings, sketches)
- Color designs (paintings, color sketches). These can be studies based on reality, as well as abstract and experimental designs. Certain working techniques are not prescribed.
- Works from the field of media design (e.g.: digital images, image processing, print media, artistic photographs, websites, computer animations and digital video works).
- In addition, works using other artistic techniques can be submitted, for example prints, collages, artistic photographs, plastic works.
Please note the detailed information on the website of arts education.
Change of univesity or course
In principle, it is also possible to start studying in a higher semester if you already have credits from related courses and/or other universities. In such a case, an individual consultation in the office hours (Prof. Hußmann or Prof. Butz) is always necessary. Please bring along documents about your previous studies! Only the professors can issue the required semester placement certificate, which entitles you to enrol in a higher semester. Such a lateral entry is also possible for the summer semester. Registration of Germans and foreign students is always done in person at the Student Office on the dates published by the Office. Students with foreign citizenship and university entrance qualifications acquired abroad will receive their personal enrolment date after an additional pre-registration with the International Office and admission to the program, which must be submitted by July 15 (for studies beginning in the winter semester) or January 15 (for studies beginning in the summer semester).
