Master Practicals

Master practicals, formerly known as project theses, are part of the Media Informatics study programme. Details on the work can be found in the study regulations.

As part of a scientific practical, students look into a specific topic intensively. E.g. this can be practical work (usually programming), literature reviews or a scientific analysis. The concrete deliverables vary depending on the project theme.

Credits

The amount of work is configured for 1 semester. For 6 ECTS this amounts to ca. 180 hours of work. In order to complete the mandatory practicals P3 and P5, which are part of the Master programme, students have to collect 12 ECTS with practical courses. Depending on the scope of the practical, 6 ECTS or 12 ECTS can be awarded. It is thus possible to collect the full 12 ECTS with a single practical. Besides the mandatory practicals P3 and P5, 2 additional practicals can be accredited as elective courses (WP3 and WR9).

Supervision and Deliverables

Master practicals are usually supervised by scientific researchers of the department. They register the practical with the examination board for the student. If the work is being conducted in collaboration with a company, an additional external supervisor from the company has to be found.

As part of the practical, students deliver a written elaboration of their work. This ensures that the results of the work are usable beyond their stay at the university. As per the discretion of the lecturer, this can be simple e.g. proper documentation of the program code.

At the end of the practical work, students give a final presentation in the Disputationsseminar. Presentations should be 10 Min + 10 Min discussion.

Topics

Open topics, that are currently being offered by the research staff at the department, are listed in this list (see PT).

It is generally possible for students to suggest their own topics. However, in this case an internal supervisor with fitting research interests has to be found.

External Topics

Research practicals can also be supervised by other departments and institutions:

  • Other departments at the LMU e.g. Faculty for Business Management
  • Other universities z.B. UniBW, TUM
  • External companies

For externally supervised topics, it is important to check that the topic is suitable for a Master practical. If the practical is being supervised by a company, students need an external supervisor at the company, as well as a university supervisor (e.g. employee at the department).
