Syllabus

Our everyday technology has many influences on humans as social individuals. Interface and system design decisions that we, as developers and system designers, make imply biases and have (often subconscious) effects on how we communicate with people, consume information, and perceive our environment and peers.
In this practical course, students will explore how interface designs affect social aspects. They will design and implement novel interface variants that propose a solution to one partial aspect of modern negative social and societal influence. Specifically, there will be projects of two research fields: (1) Chat and communication systems in the context of social and mental well-being, and (2) rethinking social media and news portal interfaces to improve societal discourse and public opinion making.
