With my research, I intend to expand and simplify the use of haptic stimuli when interacting on touch surfaces. Therefore, I follow a new approach: the spatial separation of direct touch input and resulting tactile output - i.e. remote tactile feedback. Removing the tactile stimuli away from the touching fingertip or hand is performed by integrating actuators in the user's direct environment or by using wearable interfaces. My work is aiming at simplifying the technical integration of tactile actuators, extending the spectrum of communicated haptic stimuli and improving the touch interaction as a whole.

LiquiTouch: Liquid as a Medium for Versatile Tactile Feedback on Touch Surfaces
In this paper, we propose the use of liquid as a medium for versatile tactile feedback. We present LiquiTouch, a first prototype which emits actively generated water jets in order to communicate state, function and material properties of virtual touchscreen elements. We discuss the design implications and illustrate the potentials of using liquid to enrich and improve the interaction with touch surfaces..
To appear in Proceedings of TEI 2013.

Reproducing Materials of Virtual Elements on Touchscreens
using Supplemental Thermal Feedback
In our everyday life, the perception of thermal cues plays a crucial role for the identification and discrimination of materials. However, this useful perceptual channel is disregarded for interactive elements on standard touchscreens. We present a study in which we compared the rate of object discrimination for stand-alone thermal stimuli as well as supplemental thermal stimuli characterizing virtual materials on a touchscreen. Our results show that five materials could be discriminated at a stable rate using either stand-alone or supplemental thermal stimuli. They suggest that thermal cues can enable material discrimination on touch surfaces, which gives way for expanded use of thermal stimuli on interactive surfaces.

Comparing Direct and Remote Tactile Feedback on Interactive Surfaces
Recently, researchers have assessed the notion of remote tactile feedback, i.e., the spatial separation of touch input and resulting tactile output on the user's body. This approach has the potential to simplify the use of tactile feedback with arbitrary touch devices and allows the design of novel tactile stimuli by stimulus combination. However, a formal comparison of direct and remote tactile feedback during touch input is still missing. Therefore, we conducted three consecutive laboratory studies. The results support the positive effects of tactile feedback on user performance and subjective evaluation.

Towards Simulating Push Button Behavior on Touch Surfaces
Mechanical push buttons provide various multimodal stimuli before, during and after manual activation. This makes them fast, discriminable and easy to use with virtually no visual or cognitive attention. The transfer of these rich multimodal characteristics to touch based digital interfaces entails complex and costly technology for force sensing. In the paper, we describe a theoretical model, which makes up for the lack of force data by substituting applied input pressure with input time. Subsequently, we demonstrate a working implementation of our model using a remote tactile interface.

Tactile Feedback without a Big Fuss:
Simple Actuators for High-Resolution Phantom Sensations
In order to provide sophisticated tactile sensations with simple actuator technology, we exploit a haptic psychophysical phenomenon called Phantom Sensation. We present a comparison of three standard tactile actuator technologies to see which one can recreate the Phantom Sensation with maximum effect. Our results show the way to a simple and scalable implementation of illusion-based tactile feedback for interactive surfaces. We explore the notion of the Phantom Sensation and its possible applications within a ubicomp scenario.

HapticArmrest: Remote Tactile Feedback on Touch Surfaces Using Combined Actuators
We describe HapticArmrest, a simple tactile interface that communicates tactual surface characteristic and form of interactive elements on direct touch surfaces. Spatially separating manual touch input and active tactile output allows for the combination of various types of tactile actuators for versatile haptic feedback. In a preliminary experiment, we indicate that our approach enables a reliable discrimination of virtual elements on touch surfaces solely based on tactile representations.

EdgeMatrix: Remote Tactile Feedback on Interactive Surfaces using a Shape Display
We present the EdgeMatrix, a compact 5x5 pin array to provide remote tactile feedback in conjunction with interactive surfaces. The novel idea of our approach is to communicate cues resulting from a touch interaction on a digital surface to remote parts of the user?s body. Thus, the interaction on the screen is spatially separated from the resulting tactile cues about orientation or state of virtual objects. In this paper, we discuss some benefits of our approach, describe the EdgeMatrix system and illustrate our ongoing user study.

Perceive-Sleeve: Towards Personalized Tactile Feedback on Interactive Surfaces
We propose spatially disuniting the body-part of interaction (hand, finger) and the resulting tactile feedback. In other words: while the user explores a virtual element on the interactive surface with his finger or hand, the resulting haptic stimuli are applied somewhere else on the body. Decisive for the position of application are human physiological conditions, the character of tactile information to be conveyed and the nature of the used haptic interface. This approach is potentially beneficial for providing haptic feedback on multi-touch surfaces, accuracy of interaction as well as additional personalized information via the sense of touch.

HapTouch and the 2+1 State Model:
Potentials of Haptic Feedback on Touch Based In-Vehicle Information Systems
We present HapTouch - a force-sensitive in-vehicle touchscreen device with haptic feedback that allows the user to explore and manipulate interactive elements using the sense of touch. We describe the results of a first quantitative study to investigate the effects of tactile feedback on the driver's visual attention, driving performance and operating error rate. In particular, we focus on how active tactile feedback allows the accurate interaction with small on-screen elements during driving. Our results show significantly reduced error rates and input time when haptic feedback is given.
